L’attività del laboratorio consiste nell’identificazione delle fasi cristalline, nella stima semiquantitativa e nella determinazione quantitativa di fasi cristalline. |
Experimental analyses are aimed at identifying crystalline phases in pure materials and complex mixtures; semi-quantitative estimates and quantification of identified components can be made by means of several methodological approaches, including the Rietveld method. Experimental analyses are carried out on both powdered and massive samples (e.g., thin sections, rock samples, pieces of pottery, metals, gemstones) provided that they have regular, flat surfaces. Calculation of crystallite sizes and structural analyses of single phases can be performed. The degree of crystallinity can also be determined in materials containing an amorphous fraction. Non-ambient diffraction experiments may be carried out by mounting an Anton Paar HTK16 HT furnace Pt strip heater (RT to 1600°C) on an X’Pert PRO diffractometer with Bragg-Brentano geometry, for information about structural changes and phase transformations in samples as a function of temperature. The X’Pert PRO diffractometer with focusing geometry in transmission mode configuration is used to analyse flat samples or ones in glass capillaries in order to eliminate preferential orientation and to investigate air-sensitive materials or phases mixed with liquids (e.g., cement pastes). |
